If the main miracle that a performance succeeds in performing is to take you elsewhere, the choreographic installation entitled ‘redrum,’ created by the Ravenna-based group Nanou at the Union Theater, has perfectly succeeded in doing so.

redrum - ph. Daniele Casadio, Dancers: Carolina Amoretti, Marina Bertoni, Rhuena Bracci, Andrea Dionisi, Agnese Gabrielli, Marco Maretti

The foyer of the Teatro dell'Unione in Viterbo was transformed into a place suspended in time, a space with no beginning or end, where spectators -- left free to move as they please, to enter and exit, to change position to find new perspectives of vision -- were able to experience in their own watchful reality such dreamlike dynamics as nonlinear temporality, fluid transitions between scenes, symbolism, emotional connections, suspension of logic, repetition and interconnection.

This clever device rewrites the rules of the theatrical ritual, turning the performance into a place to inhabit and inviting spectators to forget the traditional boundaries between stage and audience. Nanou 's dance narrates the fluctuations of mental time and memory with rigor and power.

The title of the performance is the first element that hooks us to the symbolic imagery of The Shining and which we can read as a real declaration of intent by choreographers Marco Valero Amico and Rhuena Bracci of nanou group, who manage, within a very fluid but at the same time rigorously studied dramaturgical structure, to evoke and enhance the enormous dreamlike scope of the reference horizon.

The choreographic structure proposes a contradictory universe, dominated by freedom and fluidity but characterized by a rigorous style and a musical dramaturgy masterfully concocted by Bruno Dorella where the dancers appear as ghostly presences sometimes welcoming, sometimes terrifying whose shadows cast on the architectural elements of the foyer and on the few scenic elements displaced in it fragment their presences activating a constant dialogue between horizontality and verticality.

The movements evoke sudden encounters, brief appearances and crossings interrupted by pauses and detours. Ground lights and backlights create a unique environment, a dreamscape of bodies and shadows, symbols and endless reminiscences. Audience movements, free to explore, add further dynamism to the event.

'Redrum ' was the concluding event of the N20 special project celebrating 20 years of the gruppo nanou, held June 4-16 at the Teatro dell'Unione thanks to the support of the City of Viterbo and the ATCL multidisciplinary circuit and hosting a high training course for professional dancers and a review of performances that started with the return of the pedagogical course 'Alphabet: Method' on June 11, continued with 'Arsura' on June 12, 'Them, Image in Motion' on June 13 and concluded with the durational choreographic performance 'redrum' on June 14 and 15.
