One enters after things have already happened, one leaves while they are still happening. In goldroom by gruppo nanou, it is time itself that is brought to light. The time of duration: two and a half hours of choreographic installation, in which the spectator may choose to enter and leave at will or, indeed, to remain in a perpetual hallucination. Time comes loose from its Cartesian coordinates and plunges into the memory of the instant before, of the time to come, of an elsewhere past. Dance, an elusive matter, moved by an incredible playlist, becomes a means of evoking ghosts, images of a Lynch out of Blue Velvet. Instead, it is the Goldroom, the ballroom of the Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining. It is, in fact, the second chapter of the Overlook Hotel project (the first, redrum, Ubu Award 2024), and it explores precisely the mechanisms of the perception of time.

As we enter the Sala Oceano Indiano of teatro India (within the Fuori Programma festival), the room is already inhabited by bodies curled up in armchairs, by a body dancing alone, as if marking or revisiting steps that once were dance. We too settle wherever we want, however we want, free to change place, to change hour, to change our minds, to leave and return again. The space is circular: at the centre, two golden strips; at the sides, tapered fabrics in gold and blue, and, again at the sides, two screens projecting images of the movement taking place, of movement that has taken place elsewhere, details of bodies, slow motion. The device gathers memories and returns them as images.
Slowly, other bodies, one by one, rise from the armchairs, take a few steps, generate trajectories. Each has a signature of their own, a recognisability, a space to explore, a return to evoke. The feeling that takes shape is that of watching many solitary dances unfolding in one's own room, sheltered from outside eyes. There, where dance finds the pleasure of being what it is.
Accomplice to this immersion is the sound landscape curated by Bruno Dorella, who now and then steps away from the console and takes a position at the side of the goldroom, immersing himself in time. From Joy Division to Portishead, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Miles Davis, Tricky, along with tracks by Dorella himself: a dark, melancholic, whispered playlist.

Just as no perception of a beginning is given, there is no end either. We are invited to leave the room, gently, while the doors close, the dance continues, the sound keeps spreading. We leave, with no applause, no bows. Without the rules we are accustomed to abiding by.
